CHURCH HUMOR
Our Deacon Was Passionate in Church Today!
No, not like that.
Today was Palm Sunday, during which the clergy of my church gave a dramatic reading of Matthew 27:11–54, the Passion of Christ.
I sat at the back of the church, so the dramatic parts sounded to me as if they were just text being read— until our deacon recited Jesus’ last words, in Aramaic, no less: “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
She sounded like a pain-wracked, frightened, dying man making a Herculean effort to call out to God. It was magnificent.
After church I told her how much I had enjoyed her recitation. “You nailed it!” I enthused.
She gave me this look. “You realize what you just said, right?”
And that’s when the realization dawned.
Mea culpa! Mea maxima culpa!
