On Discovering My Niche

It’s not what I thought it would be.

Four years ago I joined Medium with the goal of becoming a medical writer. I wrote a nice, meaty article about the contents of a typical eye report, geared toward older people with worsening eyesight, whose families aren’t familiar with medical terminology. And then I didn’t write anything else on Medium for two more years.

The next thing I wrote on Medium was an essay of pure happenstance. I took a ride on Uber, got into a fascinating conversation with the driver, and wrote an article about it. Again, two more years passed before I wrote anything else here.

Finally, this month (July 2022), I decided to get serious about writing. I first discovered that I’d lost my slot in the Partnership Program and would have to work myself back into it the hard way. That’s probably a good thing. Working to earn the interest of 100 followers has helped me learn what it takes to build and maintain a following. I hope I will continue to write articles that my readers will enjoy.

I came to Medium intending to write in either the medical or the line editing niche or perhaps in finance. However, while I think my articles in those topics are decent, I’m not a licensed medical professional or financial adviser, so I have doubts about how well my writing in those fields…
