It makes sense. I mean, how many professional novelists interact directly with their readers? Does Mercedes Lackey engage with all of her fans? Does J. K. Rowling? No. They do as you said and concentrate on writing things that people want to read. Sometimes, rarely, they meet with fans in person, but their readership grows more by word-of- mouth at that point than it does by direct engagement.
