From what I have read elsewhere on Medium, claps on a single story from 10 different readers (=10 fans) means that a story gets wider distribution, but not as widely as it would get if it were curated. I am still trying to get something curated. Aside from use of the appropriate topic tags and it being a high-quality post, I don't know what it takes.
