Except sometimes they aren't. I read an account of someone who was accosted by a Karen in a grocery store--I think--who thought the person was a store employee refusing to help the Karen find something.

The person somehow got away from the Karen, finished their shopping, and went out to their car--only to find Karen at her car, weeping.

Stunned, the person went over to Karen, asked her what was wrong, and if she could help, at which point Karen explained she was desperate to find some particular thing she needed for her granddaughter's birthday party, and she was sorry for being an ass, but she didn't know what to do.

It was an eye-opening article that reminded me that Karens are people, and when we dehumanize them by saying, "Oh, she's just an entitled bitch," we might be doing them a disservice. They might just be people who have a problem, get locked into thinking there's only one way to solve the problem, and boom! Karen.

Yes, there are the occasional ones who really are entitled, sadistic jerks, but not always.
